Osprey is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,100 at the 2010 census. It is part of the BradentonSarasotaVenice Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Osprey Public Library at Historic Spanish Point is the smallest in SarasOTA County. It opened on November 10, 2011, and offers Wi-Fi access, online access, and pick-up and drop-off service. The library is based on the King County, Washington, model, offering access to the entire library system in a modest space (630 square feet) with sustainable costs. The CDP has a total area of 6.1 square miles (16 km²), of which 5.5 sq miles (14 km²) is land and 0.6sq miles (1.6 km²") is water. O Sprey is also the mailing address for Oscar Scherer State Park and the new Scherer Thaxton Preserve, two of the few protected areas maintaining habitat for the threatened Florida scrub jay. OSprey is the location of the Blackburn Point Bridge, a one-lane bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site of an unsolved 1959 family massacre. The land where the Ospreys live resides in the 145-acre Spanish Point homestead of John Webb and Eliza Webb, who settled in Spanish Point in June 1927.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.1 square miles (16 km²) of which 5.5 square miles is land and 0.6 sq miles (1.6km²) is water. The CDP is located in the easternmost part of the state, near the border with New Mexico. It is the only CDP in the state to have a population of more than 1,000. The town's population was 1,071 at the 2010 census. It has a population density of 5.4 square miles per square mile (14 km²), with 5.3 square miles of land and 1.6 km² of water. It was the first CDP to be added to the United States Census Bureau in the 1940s, and the first to be incorporated into the state of New Mexico in the 1950s. The city's name is derived from the word "cadre" which means "place" or "town" in Spanish. It also means "hill" in English, which is the name of the town's first post office, which was established in 1858. The community's name was first used in the 18th century as a reference to the town of Cadre, in what is now known as "Cadre de Cadre" The town is located on the banks of the San Francisco Bay, and was once known as the "Sandy River" or the "San Francisco Bay".

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,143 people, 1,965 households, and 1,383 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 759.5 inhabitants per square mile (293.2/km²). There were 2,267 housing units at an average density of 415.6 per squaremile (160.5/km 2) The racial makeup of the CPD was 97.59% White, 0.19% African American, 0,14% Native American,0.87% Asian, 0.,12% Pacific Islander, 0, 36% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.40% of the population. The median income for a household in theCDP was $55,761, and the median income. for a family was $73,103. About 3.1% of families and 6.5% of people were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 3.2%. The CDP is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New Jersey. The Turnpikes are a major highway, running through the town and into New Jersey and into the New York City area. The New York State Toll Road, which connects the town with New Jersey, runs through the center of the town. The town has a population of 4,000, making it one of the largest cities in the state.

Osprey is the mailing address for Oscar Scherer State Park and the new Scherer Thaxton Preserve. The Osprey Public Library is located at Historic Spanish Point and is part of the Sarasota County Public Library System. The Blackburn Point Bridge, a one-lane bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site of an unsolved 1959 family massacre is also the location of a citrus packing house, chapel, boatyard, gardens and nature trails. It is home to a prehistoric shell mound, a turn-of-the-century pioneer homestead museum, a chapel, gardens, and a boatyard. Ospreys is also one of the few protected areas maintaining habitat for the threatened Florida scrub jay.

Osprey Public Library at Historic Spanish Point

Osprey Public Library at Historic Spanish Point is the smallest in Sarasota County. The space is only 630 square feet and is a conversion of a schoolhouse full of rich history. The branch is the countys first "connections" library, based on the King County, Washington, model, offering online access to the resources of the entire library system in a modest space (630 square feet) with sustainable operating costs. The Osprey Library opened on November 10, 2011, and offers free Wi-Fi access, online availability of the library catalog, plus pick-up and drop-off service items from other libraries within the system. The land where the school resides is part of the 145-acre homestead of John and Eliza Webb, who settled in Spanish Point in 1867. When it became apparent that the community needed a new school, the land was sold to the school board for $10 on December 28, 1926, by Mabel Webb Johnson and her husband, Ernest. The one-story, six-classroom school initially served grades one through nine and was constructed by Becchetti and Romersa for $19,000. The school was designed by Tampa architect M. Leo Elliot. The layout, with all the classrooms in a line, took advantage of cross breezes for cooling and an exterior hallway shaded classrooms from the afternoon sun. In 1994, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was used as the School Boards Teacher Education until 1989.
