In 1805, the Choctaw Indian Agency, headed by Silas Dinsmoor, was located in what is now known as Ridgeland. In 1853, James B. Yellowley founded the community of Yellowley's Crossing (later named Jessamine after his wife). In 1896, Edward Treakle and Gordon Nichols, two real estate developers from Chicago, purchased the land from Yellowley and established the Highland Colony Company. In the early 20th century, RidGeland was home to a hotel, sawmill, and a canning company. Northpark Mall opened in 1984 and brought more growth into the area. The city is located between Madison to the north and Jackson to the south. This suburban community is adjacent to the Ross Barnett Reservoir. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.7 square miles (46 km²), of which 15.9square miles (41 km²) is land and 1.8square miles(4.7km²) (10.16%) is water. As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 24,340 people, 10,632 households, and 6,046 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 57.5% White, 32.5%, Black, 0.2% Native American, 4.0% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 0.82% from two or more races.
History
In 1805, the Choctaw Indian Agency, headed by Silas Dinsmoor, was located in what is now known as Ridgeland. In 1853, James B. Yellowley founded the community of Yellowley's Crossing (later named Jessamine after his wife) In 1896, Edward Treakle and Gordon Nichols, two real estate developers from Chicago, purchased the land from Yellowley and established the Highland Colony Company. In 1910 a two-room school was created and the schools combined with those of Madison by 1925. Northpark Mall opened in 1984 and brought more growth into the area. In the 1990s, Highland Colony Parkway brought new businesses to the area, and the town grew again in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The town was predicted to grow a lot more in 1961, which turned out to be correct. It is now home to more than 10,000 people. It was once home to a hotel, sawmill, and a canning company. The main business section of the town was along Jackson Street, due to the Illinois Central Railroad located on the street. The community's dominant revenue source was agriculture, with pears and strawberries as the leading crops grown for sale. It has a population of about 6,000, with the majority of residents living in the central part of the city. The city is home to the University of Illinois at Carbondale, which was founded in 1894. The university is one of the oldest colleges in the state.
Geography
Ridgeland is located between Madison to the north and Jackson to the south. This suburban community is adjacent to the Ross Barnett Reservoir. It is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It also has a small portion of the Little Piney Creek, a tributary of the Mississippi, which flows through the city and into the Little Peculiar River. The river is known as the "Little Piney River" and was once the source of the town's water supply. It was also the site of the Battle of the Big Piney, which took place in the mid-19th century. In the early 20th century, the town was known as "Ridgerland" for its association with the town of Ridgerland, which was founded in the early 1800s. The name Ridgereland is now used to refer to a suburb of Jackson, Mississippi, where the city's population was about 2,000. It has also been used as the name of a town in South Dakota, where it is located.

Bomgar, a tech company, and C Spire Wireless, the sixth largest wireless provider in the United States, are headquartered in Ridgeland. The largest mall in the Jackson metro area, Northpark Mall, is located on County Line Road. Another shopping area is the Renaissance at Colony Park. The city is home to the University of Mississippi, which is a Division of Mississippi State University. The university is a member of the Southeastern Conference, which includes Mississippi, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. It is also the home of the National Football League's Jackson Generals, who play for the Mississippi Generals. The town has a population of about 6,000 people, the majority of whom live in the central and eastern parts of the city. Education
Ridgeland made national headlines in 2022 when mayor Gene McGee refused to send $110,000 in approved city funding to the Madison County Library System because the library system contained books that went against his Christian beliefs. Ridgeland is home to the Baptist Children's Village, which provides short-term and long-term care for abandoned, neglected, or abused children. The executive director has been Rory Lee, a former college president, since 2004. The town has a campus of Holmes Community College. It is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the town. It has two private schools: Saint Andrew's Episcopal School and Christ Covenant School. The Veritas School, a private school which closed in 2015, is also located in the town, but it is not open to the public. The city has a population of about 2,000 people, with most of its residents living in the central part of the city, which is located near the Ohio and Ohio Turnpike. It also has a small section of land that was once part of Ohio State University, which was founded in 1876. It was the first state university in the United States to be located in Ohio, and the first in the state to offer a bachelor's degree program. It opened its doors to students in 1883. It closed its doors in 1995, but reopened in 1998. The community has a history of being active in the community's social and political life. The mayor is a former member of the Democratic Party.
