Raleigh

Raleigh was first established as the community of Indian Springs and was renamed when the county seat was moved from Fairfield to Raleigh in 1834. Named for English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, Raleigh has been home to such Mississippians as Governor Robert Lowry, Governor/U.S. Senator Anselm McLaurin and pioneer William H. Hardy. In 1863, Raleigh was part of Grierson's Raid which played a major role in the defeat of the Confederate Army at Vicksburg. The town is located at 32°159N 89°3122W (32.033008, -89.522893).According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.1 square miles (13 km²), of which 5.0 square miles. is land and 0.04 square mile (0.10 km²) is water. 4% of the population claim German descent and 9% claim Irish descent. In the 2000 census, there were 1,255 people, 482 households and 334 families residing in the town. The median income for a household was $28,646, and the per capita income for the town was $13,982. In 2010, the population was 1,462, making it the largest town in Smith County. The school district is served by the Smith County School District. Its mascot is the Rah-Lee Lion and the school colors are maroon and white. It is the annual site of the Mississippi State Fair.

History

Raleigh is the primary city name, but also Sylvarena are acceptable city names or spellings, Burns on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Raleigh, Mississippi. Raleigh was first established as the community of Indian Springs and was renamed when the county seat was moved from Fairfield to Raleigh in 1834. In 1863, Raleigh was part of Grierson's Raid which played a major role in the defeat of the Confederate Army at Vicksburg. The Harrison Hotel, now closed, is a famous hotel. Many Mississippi politicians, governors and U.S. Senators have stayed there, including Theodore G. Bilbo and Jefferson Davis. The Smith County Courthouse is the major focal point of the town. Two earlier courthouses were destroyed in fires in the 1800s. The current court house was completed in 1912; but a leak in the roof caused the eventual loss of its signature dome. In 2005, a dedication service was held in honor of a new dome built as a replacement. A new Chancery Court building was completed to make room for county offices and added court room space. The new building is designed in a similar Greek revival design which resembles the County Cour courthouse. The town was home to numerous companies of the Army of Mississippi and a training camp during the Civil War. It was also home to a training center for the Mississippi National Guard and the Mississippi Army National Guard. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River near the junction of the Yazoo and Yazoo Rivers. It has a population of about 2,000 people and is home to the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, and Mississippi Tech. It also has a small airport.

Raleigh's tornado activity is slightly above the state's average and 187% above the national average. The state's tornado rate is 187% higher than the national rate. Raleigh's tornado frequency is slightly higher than its state average. Raleigh has had more tornadoes than any other city in the U.S. in the last 50 years. The city has had the most tornadoes in the past 10 years, according to the National Center for Tornado Research. The U.N. has recorded more than 1,000 twisters in the state since 2000. The national average has been 1,200. The number of twisters has been about 1,400 for the past five years, the N.C. National Weather Service says. It's the highest rate in the nation since the early 1980s, when there were 1,500 twisters per year. The average is about 1.2 in the late 1980s and early 1990s, N.D. records show. It is the highest in the United States since the mid-1990s, and it's the third-highest in the world, after Texas and Florida. The nation has seen more twisters than in any other state since the late 1970s and 1980s. The United States has seen the most twister activity in recent years, with more than a dozen twisters a day in 2011 and 2012. The most recent twister outbreak was in April 2013, when a twister touched down in North Carolina. It was the first in more than 20 years.

The population of Raleigh is 1,038.5, with the majority of its residents living in the town of Raleigh and the surrounding area. It has an elevation of 32.3°N 89 °3122 W (32.03308, 89.5°W). The town's population has declined since the 1950s, when it peaked at 1,061.7. It now has a resident population of 2,071.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 1,094 people, 435 households, and 255 families residing in the town. 4% of the population claim German descent and 9% claim Irish descent. The racial makeup of the town was 59.76% White, 39.68% African American, 0.08% Native American,0.32% from other races, and 0.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.64%. The median household income was $26,316 and the median family income was$31,458. About 18.9% of families and 24.2% of residents were below the poverty line, including 32.1% of those under age 18 and 25.7% ofThose age 65 or over. The town has a population of 1,255, with 550 housing units. The population density was 249.0 per square mile (96.1/km²) The town is located on the U.S. Census Bureau's West Virginia-New Hampshire border. It is located in the West Virginia Division of the New Hampshire Department of Game and Fish, which is part of the state's Division of Indian Affairs. The state's population was 1,245 as of the 2000 census, and 1,084 at the 2010 census. It has a median age of 35 years and a population density of 249.5 per square miles (96.1 /km²). The town's population is based on a mixture of white, black, and Native American ancestry.

Education

Raleigh High School is the educational center for the towns of Raleigh, Polkville and Sylvarena. Its school colors are maroon and white. Its mascot is Rah-Lee the Lion. The school district is part of the Smith County School District. The district is made up of three towns: Raleigh, Polkville and Sylvarena, and the town of Shelby. It is located in the central part of Smith County, about 30 miles north of the city of Raleigh. It has a population of about 2,000 people. The high school is located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh, which has an enrollment of about 1,500. The town has a history of being a leader in science and technology. It was founded in the 19th century. It also has a chapter of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which is based in Raleigh. The college has an alumni population of more than 1,000. The campus is home to the North Carolina School of the Arts and Science, which was established in 1903. The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is also located in Raleigh, and has a mascot of the same name. The university has an agriculture program that began in the early 1900s. It became the first public college in the state in the 1930s. The state's first high school opened in the 1950s. In the 1960s, it was the only one in Smith County. It closed in the 1970s.

Events

Raleigh is the site of the annual Raleigh heritage festival. It is the former home of The National Tobacco Spitting Contest. The city is home to the North Carolina Museum of Art and Science. Raleigh is also the home of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture. It was the birthplace of the American Civil Rights movement in the late 19th century and early 20th century, and is now home to a museum of the same name. It also hosts the Raleigh Heritage Festival every year. The National Museum is the home to North Carolina's oldest museum, the National Gallery of Art, which dates back to the 17th century. The museum is located in the heart of the city and was once home to Raleigh's first black mayor, George H.W. Bush, who was assassinated in 1881. The North Carolina State Museum is also located in Raleigh and hosts the annual North Carolina Heritage Festival, which is held every year in October. The Raleigh Heritage festival is held to celebrate the city's history and culture. It's also home to one of the world's oldest public art museums, the Raleigh Museum of Arts and Science, which was established in 1883. It has been home to many notable people, including the founder of North Carolina, James A. Smith, who is credited with inventing the term "tobacco spitting" in the 1800s. The festival also hosts a number of other cultural events, such as the Raleigh Shakespeare Festival and the Raleigh Festival of the Arts and Sciences.
