Linton

Linton is a city in and the county seat of Emmons County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 1,071 at the 2020 census. Linton received its first connection via long-distance telephone in 1905. The Hollywood agent Bill Daly, of Bill Daly Associates, was the manager for Lawrence Welk and the lightweight world boxing champion Carlos Ortiz, among others. Roman Catholic bishop Austin Anthony Vetter was born in Linton. The city serves as a governmental, commercial and business hub forEmmons County. The county seat was originally in the town of Williamsport, which was located in the northern half of the county in Township 135N, Range 76W, Section 15 on the east side of what is today 9th Ave. SE between 62nd St. and 63rd St. SE. In 1885, two years after the county was officially organized, the city of Linton was formed. The first two votes taken during the 1880s and 1890s failed completely. The third resulted in a decision to move the county Seat to the center of the country and create a new town, which eventually become the cityof Linton, which is now the county's county seat. The current county seat is Winona, which has a population of 1,788. The town of Winona is located on the north side of the Bismarck River, about two miles northeast of Hazelton, the state capital of North Dakota. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the Linton Army Ammunition Plant in the early 1900s.

History

Linton is the primary city name, but also Temvik are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Linton, North Dakota. Linton is a city in Emmons County, South Dakota. Linton was the result of a political dispute between residents in the northern half of the county and those in the southern half. In 1885, two years after the county was officially organized, the county seat was in the town of Williamsport, which was located in the north. The northern part was more densely settled than the southern part, so this created problems when it came time to vote. Eventually, it was decided to take a vote to see if residents favored dividing the county in two. When the votes were tallied, residents had decided against splitting the county. However this did not end the dispute, and the effort to move the seat of government from Williamsport to Winona continued. The decision to move county seat to the center of the country resulted in a decision to create a new town, which eventually become the city of Linton. As a result of losing the court case, Linton has remained there since the early 20th century. The town of Winona has since become the new county seat of county government. The city was incorporated as a village on April 26, 1906; and as a city on April 6, 1914.

There were 642 housing units at an average density of 856.0 per square mile (330.5/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 98.2% White, 0.1% African American, 0,2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population. The city's median income was $25,750, and the median income for a family was $33,203. About 10.8% of families and 16.7%. of the residents were below the poverty line, including 14.1%. of those under age 18 and 29.6% of those age 65 or over. The average household size was 1.97 and the average family size was 2.62. The median age was 54 years, with 17.7% of residents under the age of 18; 3.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 16.1. were from 25 to 44; 29.9%. were from 45 to 64; and 32.7. were 65 years of age or older. The gender ratio was 47.5%. of residents were male and 52.5%; of those who were 65 and older, it was 52%. of people live in a single-family home.

Linton has a warm-summer humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps. The city is located near the intersection of US Highway 83 and ND Highway 13. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the population of Linton at 1,000 in 2010. The town has a high school graduation rate of 1.7%. Linton is home to the Linton High School, which was founded in 1903. The school is located in Linton and has a junior high and high school. The high school has a senior high school, which opened in 1913. The Linton School District was established in 1925. The district has an enrollment of 1,200. The community has a history of being active in the community since the early 1900s. It has been known as Linton since the 1800s. The village has a population of about 1,100. It is located on the banks of the Red River, which flows into the Little Red River. The Red River flows through Linton. The river is a tributary of the Little Black River. It was named after the Redwood River, one of the rivers that flows through the town. The River is also the source of the town's nickname, "Linton".
