East Longmeadow is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States situated in the Pioneer Valley region of Western Massachusetts. The town is 5 mi (8.0 km) southeast of downtown Springfield, part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is 25 mi (40 km) north of Hartford, 88 mi (142 km) southwest of Boston, and 142 mi (229 km) northeast of New York City. In 2020, the old train depot was bought and renovated into an ice cream stand, which will open for the first time in spring 2021. The Redstone Rail Trail was built on a 1.6 mile section of where the tracks ran in the early 2010s. It starts from Maple Street by Dunkin' Donuts to Denslow Road, out by the Hasbro plant (now Cartamundi) The town was well known for its brownstone quarries, even when it was still a part of Longmeadows. It hosts an annual Fourth of July Parade, which is one of the largest 4th of July parades in Western Massachusetts, and an annual fireworks display, traditionally held on July 3. In 2010, there were 16,187 people, 5,248 households, and 3,988 families residing in the town. As of the census of 2010, the town has a total area of 13.0 square miles (34 km²), of which 13.4 square miles of land (34km²) is land and 0.04 square mile (0.10 km²) (0.31%) is water.

History

East Longmeadow is the primary city name, but also E Longmeadow are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. The town of Longmeadow, Massachusetts was first settled in the 17th century. In 1894, East Village separated from the rest of the town. The Redstone Rail Trail was built on a 1.6 mile section of the old railroad. It will be opened for the first time in the spring of 2021. It runs from Maple Street by Dunkin' Donuts to Dlow Road by the Cartamundi plant.

Sports

The town is home to the 2007 and 2019 Western Massachusetts champions in Varsity High School Baseball. East Longmeadow and Longmeadows compete in an annual Thanksgiving Day football game that routinely attracts a few thousand spectators. The town is also the home of the Western Mass champions in Girls Indoor Track in 2010, and 2011. In 2011, the town's girls track team won the state championship in the girls indoor track event. In 2012, the boys track team took the state title in the boys indoor track competition. In 2013, the girls track and field team was the state champions in the girls indoor track event in the state. In 2014, the school's girls track and field team was the state champions in the girls Indoor Track and Field Event. In 2015, the school team won the state championship in the girls indoors track and field event with a score of 8-1. In 2016, the team won the Western Mass championship in the girls indoor Track and Field event with a score of 9-0. In 2017, the high school team won the Western Massachusetts champion in Varsity High School Baseball with a record of 7-2. In 2018, the High School Team Winners and Runner-up Championships in Baseball and Girls Indoor Track. The team also won the State Championship in the Varsity Varsity Baseball event.

East Longmeadow is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States.It is bordered by Enfield and Somers, Connecticut, to the south; Hampden to the east; Wilbraham on the northeast; Springfield on the north and northwest; and Longmeadows on the west.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.0 square miles (34 km²), of which 0.04 sq miles (0.10 km²) is water. It has a population of 2,816. The town is located in the western part of the Berkshire County region of the state. It is located on the Massachusetts Turnpike, which runs through the center of the town. It was named for the town's founder, William Long, who was born in the town in 1881. The name is derived from the Long Meadow, which was once the site of the first recorded European settlement in the area. It also means "Long Meadow" or "Long Meadows" in English. The word "Longmeadow" means "long grass" and "meadows" in the local dialect. It means "millions of acres" in Old English, "longmeadow", or "long meadow" in modern-day English. In the late 19th century, the name was used to refer to an area of land that was once part of Berkshire County, where the town was located. It later became known as "Long Meadow" and later "LongMeadow".

The racial makeup of the town was 97.52% White, 0.74% African American,0.04% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.,05% Pacific Islander, 0,24% from other races, and 0.52%. The town's population was spread out, with 24.8% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 18. 8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there are 90.7 males. There were 5,363 housing units at an average density of 413.5 per square mile (159.7/km²) The median income for a household was $62,680, and $70,571 for a family. The per capita income for the town is $27,659. About 4.7% of those under age 18 and 5.9%. of those age 65 or over are living below the poverty line, including 2.1% of families and 3.4. of those over age 65. Points of interest

Historic places in East Longmeadow include the numerous red and brown sandstone quarries that gave the town its industrial beginnings. The Rotary itself was made famous by Robert Ripley, author of Ripley's Believe It or Not and listed because of the seven streets feeding into it with no traffic lights. Also an integral part of the town are the many churches, such as St. Michael's (Catholic), St. Paul's (Lutheran) and St. Mark's (Episcopal) East Long meadow was home to Milton Bradley Company for many years, and still houses one of their largest facilities after Hasbro bought this corporation in 1984. In 2016 the Hasbro location was purchased by Cartamundi. East LongMeadow is also home (or partial home) to a few golf courses such as Fenway Golf/Pine Knoll Executive Golf Course and Franconia Golf Course. The Clubhouse is located on Dwight St in Springfield Mass, but the course itself runs into East longmeadow on Westwood Avenue and into Longmeadows as well. The town is home to the National Museum of American History, which includes the original Smithsonian Institution building in Washington, D.C. It is also the home of the First Congregational Church, which was founded in 1788. The National Museum has a collection of more than 2,000 pieces of art, many of which can be found in the museum's collection. It also has a museum of American history.

Government

Until June 30, 2016, East Longmeadow had an annual open town meeting held on the third Monday in May presided by a town moderator, who also was responsible for appointing the town's Appropriations Committee. The chief executive board in the town was the Board of Selectmen, which consisted of three popularly elected members who held staggered three-year terms. The town also has numerous advisory boards under these various executive boards. The East Long meadow Charter Review Commission was elected in April 2015 to review the form of town government and to write a town charter for submission to the voters. This passed in April 2016. With the adoption of the new charter, East longmeadow became a statutory city under Massachusetts state law on July 1, 2016. In December 2016, the Town Council voted unanimously (70) to offer Denise Menard the job of Town Manager. She was the first Town Manager in East LongMeadow history until her retirement in August 2019. Mary McNally was hired as the town’s second-ever Town manager in late 2019. In October 2021, McNally resigned as Town Manager, and won election in the next year's annual election to replace her. The Town Council elected a seven-member Town Council in June 2016, and they serve staggered three year terms. They are currently seated on a five-member school committee. They were elected by the voters in November 2016. They serve staggered 3-year Terms.  The Town Council appointed a Town Councilors to fill vacancy, won election in December 2016.

In fiscal year 2008, the town of East Longmeadow spent 1.4% ($584,361) of its budget on its public library; $38 per person. In 2004, a new library was built. The town's public library began in 1896, but a new one was built in 2004. The library costs $38 to use, or about $1,000 a year for a family of four. It is located in the town's downtown area, on the corner of Main Street and Main Street East, in the East LongMeadow section of the town.
