Boyertown (Pennsylvania Dutch: Boyerschteddel) is a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,055 at the 2010 census, a 2.9% population growth since the 2000 U.S. Census. Boyertown is known for the many painted fiberglass bears that can be found throughout the town and borough. The community was named for its founders, brothers Henry and Daniel Boyer. It was the site of the Rhoads Opera House fire in 1908. It has a hot-summer humid continental climate (Dfa) and average monthly temperatures range from 30.0 °F in January to 74.7°F in July. It is part of the Reading Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is further included in the Philadelphia-Reading-Camden Combined Statistical Area. The area is served by The Berks-Mont News, a weekly paper with a circulation of 5,500, and the Eastern Berks Gateway Railroad, which runs through the borough. It also includes one senior high school, two middle schools, seven elementary schools, and a cyber school program. The borough is home to the New England Patriots football player Develin Irwin (Elaine Mellencamp), a former football player for the New York Patriots and New England Football Club. The town is located along the southeastern border of Berks County; it is bordered on the north, west, and south by Colebrookdale Township; to the southeast it isbordered by Douglass Township in Montgomery County.

History

A post office called Boyertown has been in operation since 1828. The community was named for its founders, brothers Henry and Daniel Boyer. In 1908, the Rhoads Opera House fire was the site of the fire that claimed the lives of six people. The town has a population of about 1,000 people. It is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the town.

Geography

Boyertown is located along the southeastern border of Berks County. It has a hot-summer humid continental climate (Dfa) and average monthly temperatures range from 30.0 °F in January to 74.7°F in July. The hardiness zone is 6b. Boyertown has a total area of 0.77 square miles (2.0 km²), all land. It is included in the Reading Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is further included in Philadelphia-Reading-Camden Combined Statistical Area. The town is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to Delaware. The turnpike is one of the busiest roads in the U.S., with more than 100,000 vehicles per day. It was built in the 19th century as part of the Reading, Philadelphia, and Reading, Pennsylvania railroads. The city was named after the town's founder, William Boyert, who was born in the area in 18th century. He is a former mayor of the town, and served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1969 to 1974. The current mayor is Michael Scanlon, who served as mayor from 1998 to 2007. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate from 2002 to 2007, and was re-elected in 2008. The borough has a population of 2,000, the majority of which is made up of residents from Berks and Montgomery Counties. It also has a small percentage of residents who live in the city of Philadelphia.

The borough is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New Jersey and New Jersey via the Raritan River and the Susquehannock River. It is the only borough in New Jersey that is not part of the New York City metropolitan area. It was the site of the U.S. Civil War, when the Battle of the Bulge took place in 1864.

Transportation

Pennsylvania Route 73 (Philadelphia Avenue) is the main eastwest road through the borough. Pennsylvania Route 100 bypasses the borough just outside its eastern border, leading north to Macungie near Allentown and south into Pottstown. This line is used by the Colebrookdale Railroad tourist line and the Eastern Berks Gateway Railroad freight line. To the northwest it leads to Blandon north of Reading, and Pennsylvania Route 562 (Reading Avenue) leads west to Reading proper. A railroad line runs south from Boyertown to Potttown, leading to the city of Reading. The borough is home to the Pennsylvania State Museum, which is located in the center of the city. It is also the home of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, which runs through the end of the year. It also has a museum for the Pennsylvania Centennial, which takes place in the spring and summer of each year. The museum is open to the public, and has a collection of historic items, including the Pennsylvania National Guard Museum, the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum, and the Pennsylvania Museum of American History and Industry, which dates back to the 18th century. It was also the site of the opening of the Reading and Reading Railroad, which ran from 1854 to 1859. The Reading and Philadelphia Railroad was built in 1854. The Pennsylvania State Railroad Museum was opened in 1858. It runs through Reading and the Reading area, and was later extended into the city in 1881. The Reading and Reading Railway was built to connect the city with Reading proper in 1883.
