The town has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km²), all land. It is located in Newton County, Mississippi, the county seat of which is the town of Decatur and the city of Hattiesburg. The town is home to the Decatur High School football team. The school is located in the town of Decatur, which has a population of 1,071. The high school football team is known as the "Decatur Bulldogs" The town's football team has a team of players known as "The Decatur Falcons" The football team won the state championship in 2008 and 2009. The team also won the national championship in 2010 and 2011. It was the first time the town had won the title in the history of the United States. It is also the first town in the state to win the national title in both 2008 and 2010. The city has a history of more than 50 years of continuous growth. It has been the site of the Decartown Massacre, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It also is the birthplace of the town's first post-bellum mayor, William "Bill" Hogue, who was born in Decatur and died in the early 20th century. He was buried in a shallow grave near the town. He is survived by his son, William Hogue Hogue Jr., who was also born inDecatur.
