McComb is a city in Pike County, Mississippi, United States. The city is approximately 80 miles (130 km) south of Jackson. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 12,790. It is the principal city of the McComb, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area. During the 1960s, McComb and nearby areas were the sites of extreme violence by KKK and other white supremacist opponents to the Civil Rights Movement. In 2006, Zach Patterson was elected as McComb's first African American mayor. In 2018, voters elected Quordiniah Lockley as mayor, and for the first time elected a city board consisting of an African American majority. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a total area of 11.6 square miles (30 km²), of which 11 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles of land (0.2 km²) is water. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. McComb has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on Demographics maps. In the United States Census 2020, there were 12,478 people, 4,478 households, and 2,413 people in McComb. The population of McComb was 12,789 in the 2010 Census, and it is expected to rise to 12,800 by the end of the 2020 Census year. It was the site of flashpoints in the violent Illinois Central shopmen's strike of 1911. In 1961, SNCC conducted its first voter registration project in Mississippi in this city.

History

McComb was founded in 1872 by Henry Simpson McComb of the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad. The rail center in McComb was one of flashpoints in the violent Illinois Central shopmen's strike of 1911. In 1961, SNCC conducted its first voter registration project in Mississippi in this city. On October 20, 1977, a chartered plane carrying members and crew of rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in a swamp near McComb, killing lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and road manager Dean Kilpatrick. In 2006, Zach Patterson was elected as McComb's first African American mayor. In 2018, voters in the city of McComb elected Quordiniah Lockley as mayor, and for the first time elected a city board consisting of an African American majority. The city is located in Pike County, Mississippi, near the state line with Louisiana. It is located on the Mississippi River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The town has a population of about 3,000, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. It was the site of 11 bombings directed against African Americans in 1964 after passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In the 1960s, the city was the sites of extreme violence by KKK and other white supremacist opponents to the Civil rights Movement. In 1964, civil rights activists began the Mississippi Project and what would be called Freedom Summer, with teams returning to southwest Mississippi. They sang, "We'll Never Turn Back.".

McComb is located at the junction of the Arkansas River and the Arkansas Turnpike. The city is home to the McComb High School football team, which won the state championship in 2010. The McComb Police Department is based in McComb and has been in charge of the district since the 1970s. The department has been involved in the investigation of the death of a McComb police officer in 2008. The FBI is also conducting an investigation into the death, and has interviewed several McComb residents. The case is being investigated by the FBI and the local district attorney, who is also a former McComb officer, as well as the state district attorney and the state superintendent of police.

The racial makeup of the city was 66.29% African American, 31.22% White, 0.17% Native American, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 0.82% from two or more races. The city's population was spread out, with 29.0% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.13. The median income for a household was $26,507, and the median family income was $27,899. About 27.4% of families and 31.0%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 43.7%. of those under the Age of 18 and 21.3% of those 65 and older. Arts and culture

An annual Earth Day Fest organized by Pike School of Art Mississippi is celebrated in April on the Saturday of or following Earth Day. The Summit Street Unity Festival is celebrated annually on the third Saturday in October. The Black History Gallery annually celebrates Juneteenth. A museum in Comb City, Mississippi celebrates the anniversary of the Civil War-era emancipation of slaves in 18th century Mississippi. The Mississippi Museum of Art celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The museum also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Mississippi's first African-American centenary in 1864. The state's first black mayor, William McWhorter, was elected to office in 1868. The first black governor, Winnebago County, Mississippi, elected a black man in 1875. The city's first woman mayor, Mary McWharton, was born in 1874. The town's first man-made lake, the Mississippi River, was built in 1876. The river was named after the town's founder, Winneshiek "Wendy" McWhorton, who was the first black man to live in the state. It is the state's oldest public art museum, having been established in 1881. It was named for the town’s first black resident, William “Bill” McWhirton, and is located on the banks of the Yazoo River. It opened in 1883. It has since become a popular tourist attraction. It also hosts a museum, the Black History gallery.

McComb and the surrounding Pike County area has three separate school districts, one private school, and a community college. McComb High School is one of the 100 National Model Schools. Parklane Academy is a K4 through 12th grade private college preparatory school. Southwest Mississippi Community College is located seven miles north of McComb, and northeast of Summit, MS. St. Alphonsus Catholic Church is located in McComb and provided classes kindergarten through seventh grade until the school closed in 2014. There are 7 schools in the McComb School District, Otken Elementary, Kennedy Early Childhood Center, Higgins Middle School, Denman Jr. High School, McComb high School, Business & Technology Center, and Summit Academy. It is the first of its kind in the Pike County Area to be located in the central McComb region. The school district also has a middle school, high school and a high school in the northern part of the county. The district has a total of 7 schools, including a middle and high school. It also has an elementary and early childhood center, and an after-school program for children with special needs. It has a high-school, middle school and an elementary school with a special-needs program. There is also a business and technology center, as well as a private school and private school. The city has a post-secondary school, which is a first in Pike County. The high school has a junior high and a senior high. The community college is located near the center of the city.
