Lawrenceburg is a city in Dearborn County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,042 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Ohio River, west of Cincinnati. Lawrenceburg was named for the maiden name of the wife of founder Samuel C. Vance. In the 19th century, Lawrenceburg became an important trading center for riverboats on theOhio River. The two largest ethnic groups in Lawrenceburg and Lawrenceburg Township are 29% German Americans, and 19% Irish Americans, 4.18% African American, 0.45% Asian, and 2.2% from two or more races. The town of Lawrenceburg has a total area of 5.21 square miles (13.49 km²), of which 4.94 sq miles (12.79 km²) (or 94.82%) is land and 0.27sq miles (0.70 km²) (or 5.18%) is water. The Lawrenceburg Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at 39°546N 84°5128W (39.096015, -84.857783). It is the county seat and largest city of Dearborn. County, and is located in the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio tri-state metro area. In 2010, the city had a population of 4,685 people, 1,914 households, and 1,140 families living in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 93.5% White, 3.0% African. History

Lawrenceburg is the primary city name, but also Greendale are acceptable city names or spellings. Founded in 1802, Lawrenceburg was named for the maiden name of the wife of founder Samuel C. Vance. Lawrenceburg became an important trading center for riverboats on the Ohio River. The Dearborn County Courthouse, Downtown Lawrenceburg Historic District, Hamline Chapel United Methodist Church, the Liberty Theatre, the Dunn Home, and Vance-Tousey House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Lawrenceburg Public Library is located in the historic district of Lawrenceburg. It is open to the public and offers classes in English, French, Spanish, German, and American Sign Language. It also offers a museum of local history, called the Lawrenceburg Museum of History and Art, which opened in the early 1900s. The library is located on the second floor of the historic courthouse, which dates back to the 1802 founding of the town. It was built by Samuel Vance, the son of the founder of the city, and his wife, who was born in 1801. The town is now home to a number of historic buildings, including the courthouse, the library, the theater, and the library. The downtown area is also home to the Liberty Theater, which was built in the late 19th century as a theater for riverboat passengers. The Liberty Theatre is located at the heart of the downtown area, and was built to house the theater's patrons in the 1930s and '40s. It has since been converted into a public library and museum of history and art.

Lawrenceburg has had a long history with whiskey production, earning the city the nickname Whiskey City, U.S.A. MGP Indiana, formerly Seagram's, operates within Lawrenceburg, and distills various alcoholic spirits. Perfect North Slopes, a ski area located off Route 1, boasts hills for skiing, snowboarding, and snowing tubing. Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg (formerly Argosy Casino) is found in Lawrenceburg and is the closest Indiana riverboat casino to downtown Cincinnati. An Anchor Glass Container (formerly Thatcher Glass) is located within the city. The city is home to the Indiana State Fair, which is held annually in the summer. The Lawrenceburg Public Library is located in the city and is open through the end of the year. It is open to the public during the summer months, and the winter months (weather permitting) It is also the home of the Lawrenceburg High School football team, which was founded in the early 1960s. It was the first high school football team in the state of Indiana. Lawrenceburg is the site of the University of Indiana's football stadium, which opened in the 1970s. The university's football team is known as the Hoosier Hoosiers, and is located on the Indiana Turnpike, which runs through the town of Lawrenceburg. The University of Cincinnati's football program is based in the town, and has been there since the 1980s. In the 1990s, Lawrenceburg was the home to AEP, which operated the Tanner's Creek Generating Station, now AEP.
