West Jordan

West Jordan is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is a suburb of Salt Lake City and has a mixed economy. According to the 2020 Census, the city had a population of 116,961, placing it as the third most populous in the state. The city occupies the southwest end of the Salt Lake Valley at an elevation of 4,330 feet (1,320 m) Named after the nearby Jordan River, the limits of the city begin on the river's western bank and end in the eastern foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains. Kennecott Copper Mine, the world's largest man-made excavation, is located in West Jordan. City landmarks include Gardner Village, established in 1850, and South Valley Regional Airport, formerly known as "Salt Lake Airport #2". The airport serves general aviation operations as well as a base for the 211th Aviation Regiment of the Utah Army National Guard flying Apache and Black Hawk helicopters. The fastest development is currently taking place between 4800 State Route 111 and the lower slopes of the eastern Oqurrh Mountains, where the city's largest mall, Jordan Landing, is being built. The first leather tannery west of the Mississippi River was constructed in the city in 1851. Sears chose the city as its first Sears Grand location, a new store concept, which opened its doors in 2003 at the Jordan Landing shopping center. Current major construction projects include a new main campus for Salt Lake Community College, the expansion of Jordan Valley Hospital, and Midvale's current transit-oriented development on the east border.

History

West Jordan is the primary city name, but also W Valley City, West Valley, West Valley City are acceptable city names or spellings, W Jordan, W Valley, WJ, Wjrd on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is West Jordan, Utah. West Jordan was founded around 1849 on the western banks of the Jordan River. The population grew from 4,221 in 1970 to 27,327 in 1980, 42,892 in 1990, and 68,336 in 2000, reaching 103,712 according to the 2010 Census. Growth has been phenomenal, beginning in the 1970s and continuing unabated since. Transportation issues along with school overcrowding are the city's top concerns as it attempts to deal with rapid population growth. Current major construction projects include a new main campus for the Salt Lake Community College, the expansion of Jordan Valley Hospital, and Midvale's current transit-oriented development on the east border. Sears chose the city as its first Sears Grand location, a new store concept, which opened its doors in 2003 at the Jordan Landing shopping center. The first leather tannery west of the Mississippi River was constructed in the city in 1851. Old downtown West Jordan is in the process of being reconstructed as a transit- oriented development called "Briarwood" The plans called for an expanded Main Park, a history museum, an indoor recreation center, a senior center, and a large courthouse to serve the Utah State Third District. As of 2014, the library and TRAX light-rail have been completed and opened. The second phase calls for the demolition of a dilapidated commercial area, to be replaced by six-story buildings housing a performing arts center, large library, a hotel, an education center, conference center, retail and office space.

Geography

West Jordan is bordered on the west by the Oquirrh Mountains and on the east by the Jordan River. The western neighborhoods of Welby, Copper Hills, and Jordan Hills are rapidly growing regions. The fastest development is currently taking place between 4800 West and State Route 111. The city lies approximately 18 miles (29 km) southwest of downtown Salt Lake City. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 30.9 square miles (80.0 km²), all land. It is located on the lower slopes of the eastern OquIRrh Mountains. It has a population of 1,816,000 (as of the 2010 Census) and a population growth rate of 1.7 percent (from 2000 to 2010). It is the largest city in the state of Utah, followed by South Jordan and West Valley City, with a total population of 2,715,000. It lies on the eastern side of the Jordan Valley, which is a tributary of the Wasatch Range, and the eastern edge of the Salt Lake Valley, where the city of Wasatch Springs is located. It was founded in the 18th century by the Mormon settlers, and was named for the nearby Jordan River, which runs through the center of the city. In the early 1900s, the town was known as West Jordan, and its name was derived from the name of a pioneer family. The name was later changed to "West Jordan" and later to "Jordan".

Government

West Jordan was incorporated on January 10, 1941. In November 2017, the citizens voted to change the form of government to a council-mayor form beginning at noon on January 6, 2020. The city council is composed of seven individuals: a chair, vice-chair and five council members. The mayor is the chief executive of the city and appoints a chief administrative officer to oversee the functions of the City. The council meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7:00 PM. The chair is limited to two consecutive terms of one year without a one-year break. All terms begin on January 1 following their respective election. The Mayor implements the council's policies and can exercise veto power unless the council uses its veto override power which requires 5 votes. The four city council members are elected to four-year terms. The three at-large council members are elected during an offset two year election cycle. Thus ensuring that at least one city official representing the whole city is voted on every two years. The mayor and the four council members representing a district are elected at the same time while the three council members represent a district at an offset twice-year cycle. The other three are elected from four districts within the city, while the other three is elected at- large or citywide. The president of the council presides at city council meetings. The meeting is held on the third and fourth Wednesday of the month of the year at 7-00pm.

Demographics

According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2017, there were 113,905 people in West Jordan. The racial makeup of the county was 72.2% non-Hispanic White. 19.6% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. The county is located in the eastern part of Utah. It is home to the University of Utah, where the football team is known as the Utes. The Utes play in the Utah State Series against Brigham Young University. The team's mascot is the Ute, and the team's colors are blue and white. The game is called "The Utes vs. the Jazz" and is played on the Uts' home field, the Jordan River. The series is also known as "The Game of Thrones" and "The Lord of the Rings" It is the first of the three series to be held in Utah. The second series is scheduled to begin in 2018. The third series will be "The Godfather" and will run through 2019. The fourth series will begin in 2020. The final series will take place in 2023 and 2024, and will focus on the state of Utah and the region as a whole. It will also include the city of Salt Lake City and the town of West Jordan, as well as the cities of Ogden and Layton. The last series will run in 2026 and 2027. The fifth and final series begins in 2027 and 2028, and concludes in 2028.

Education

Most of West Jordan lies in the Jordan School District, but two small sections lie in the Granite School District. The city has 16 elementary schools, four middle schools, and two high schools. It is also the location of campuses of Salt Lake Community College and Broadview University. West Jordan is located in the Wasatch Range of the U.S. state of Utah. It was once part of the Utah Territory, but was later annexed by the state. It has a population of 1.2 million. It lies on the Utah River, which runs through the northern part of its downtown area, and is the source of the city's name. It also has a lake, the West Jordan River, and a lake in the southern portion of the town, which is also called the Jordan River and was once known as the South Jordan River. The Jordan River runs through West Jordan, and the city is also home to the Salt Lake Valley School District and West Jordan High School. The town's name is derived from the word "Jordan," which means "West Jordan" or "Jordan River" in Spanish. The name West Jordan was first used to refer to the town's first post-revolutionary president, George W. Jordan, who was elected to office in 1868. The current mayor, Jim Bridger, was elected in 1974. The mayor is a former mayor of the same city, who served from 1973 to 1978. The City is home to Salt Lake City, Utah, which was founded in 1876.

Transportation

Interstate 15, a twelve-lane freeway, is located east of the city limits, providing access from the north and south. Bangerter Highway (State Route 154), a six-lane expressway, traverses the center of theCity. New Bingham Highway, mostly a four-lane road, begins as 7720 South at State Street (U.S. Route 89) in Midvale, curves into 7800 South as it enters the city, and finally heads southwest to end at Copperton. Redwood Road (State. Route 68), aSix- Lane road, runs through the eastern portion of the. city. The city is served by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) bus system, which runs every half-hour during peak hours. Service in the city was increased during the August 2007 redesign of the bus system. A TRAX light rail line also serves the area. The first phase of the project was completed December 15, 2012. In the middle of West Jordan is located the South Valley Regional Airport. Its FAA designation is U-42. It was formally known as Airport #2, because it is owned by Salt Lake City. Because of its location within the city, a large shopping center was built next to the airport, which resulted in the. shopping center being named Jordan Landing. In addition to significant road widening projects, the Mountain View Corridor freeway is currently under construction to service the western portion of. the city. Elected officials have blamed this situation on the fact that the city is the most populous in the state that is not directly served by a freeway.

In the fictional HBO drama Big Love, one of Bill Henrickson's home improvement stores is located in West Jordan. The store is called the West Jordan Home Improvement Store. In the show, the store is owned by Bill Henrick's son, who is a real-life home improvement store owner. The West Jordan store is one of the stores featured in the HBO series Big Love. It is located on the second floor of a building in the fictional town of West Jordan, Utah.
