Green Bay

Green Bay is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is at the head of Green Bay, a sub-basin of Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Fox River. As of the 2020 Census, Green Bay had a population of 107,395, making it the third-largest city on Lake Michigan. Green Bay is well known for being the home city of the National Football League (NFL)'s Green Bay Packers. In 1634, Jean Nicolet founded a small trading post here, originally named La Baye or La Baie des Puants (French for "the Bay of Stinking Waters"). Nicolet's settlement was one of the oldest European permanent settlements in America. Charles de Langlade and his family were the first permanent settlers in Green Bay in 1765. They are considered to be the first European settlers in the present-day state ofWisconsin. The town was incorporated in 1754. The city is the home of the NFL's Packers, who play in the Green Bay Bay Packers' home stadium, Lambeau Field, which opened in 1964. The Packers are currently the No. 1-ranked team in the NFL, ahead of the San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego 49ers, with a record of 13 wins and two losses. The team is ranked No. 2 in the NFC East, behind only the Minnesota Vikings, who are No.1 in the AFC East. The NFL's Green BayPackers are currently No. 3 in the league, behind the Seattle Seahawks and the Dallas Cowboys.

History

Green Bay is the primary city name, but also Allouez are acceptable city names or spellings, Scott on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Green Bay, Wisconsin. Nicolet founded a small trading post here in 1634, originally named La Baye or La Baie des Puants (French for "the Bay of Stinking Waters"). Nicolet's settlement was one of the oldest European permanent settlements in America. The first permanent settlers were Charles de Langlade and his family from Quebec, who moved to Green Bay in 1765. The town was incorporated in 1754. Great Britain took control of some French areas during the Seven Years' War, known as the French and Indian War in some areas of North America. After the British defeated the French in 1763, France ceded its lands east of the Mississippi in North America to them. The British gradually took over the territory in gradually taking control of Green Bay and gaining control of all of Wisconsin in 1761. In 1791, two free African Americans set up a fur trading post among the present-day present day Marinette, Wisconsin. Some Anglo-New Englanders, some African American freedmen, some French Canadians, some Anglo-Americans, and a few African Americans arrived in the area in the 1770s and 1780s. In 1671, a Jesuit Mission was set up in the region. A fort was added in 1717 and gradually associated development took place. The area is generally recognized as the first European settler, establishing a trading post at Green Bay, Wisconsin, in 1734. It was also the first permanent settler in the state of Wisconsin while it was under British control.

Geography

Green Bay has a humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification Dfb), with some moderation due to the city's proximity to Lake Michigan. There are four distinct seasons, often with severe or extreme variation between them in terms of temperature and precipitation. Tornadoes are rare in the Green Bay area, with the strongest being an F3 tornado that hit the community of Pittsfield on June 26, 1969. The wettest month in Green Bay is August, when 3.77 inches (95.8 mm) of precipitation falls, mostly in the form of rainfall from thunderstorms. February is the driest month, with 1.01 inches (25.7mm) of rain falling on average. The average high temperature is 81.2 °F (27.3 °C) in July, the warmest month. The city has a total area of 55.76 square miles (144.41km²), of which 45.48 square miles. (117.79km²) is land and 10.28 sq miles (26.62km²] is water. About 14% of the city is inside the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin reservation. Green Bay experiences warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters, with 6.1 days of 90°F (32°C)+ highs, 68 days where the high remains at or below freezing, and 19 days with sub-0 °C (18 °F) lows annually. From December to February, even during thaws, the temperature rarely reaches 50 °F.

Demographics

The 2020 census population of the city included 779 people incarcerated in adult correctional facilities and 1,783 people in student housing. Of the population age 25 and over, 87.5% were high school graduates or higher and 24.4% had a bachelor's degree or higher. According to the American Community Survey estimates for 2016-2020, the median income for a household in the city was $52,214, and the median incomes for a family was $65,993. The per capita income for the city for the 2010 census was $28,092. The city's population was 107,395 as of the census of 2020. The median age in the City was 33.7 years. The gender makeup of theCity was 49.4 per cent male and 50.6 per cent female. There were 45,789 housing units at an average density of 1,006.8 per square mile (388.7/km²). Ethnically, the population was 17.9% Hispanic or Latino of any race. When grouping both Hispanic and non-Hispanic people together by race, the city is 66.6% White, 5.5 per cent Black or African American, 4.4 percent Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 10.6 percent from two or more races. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.06. The population density was 2,332.1 people per squaremile (900.5/ km²).

Economy

Green Bay is known as the "Toilet Paper Capital of the World" because of the prevalence of the paper industry in the city. Northern Paper Company offered the first splinter-free toilet paper in the early 1930s. Today, major paper producers include Georgia-Pacific, Procter & Gamble, and Steen-Macek Paper Company. As of 2017, the largest employers in Green Bay were: Associated Banc-Corp, Green Bay Area Public School District, JBS USA, Expert Global Solutions, Walmart, Schreiber Foods, the Green Bay Packers, Nature's Way, HJ Martin and Son, and Nicolet National Bank. Séura, a manufacturer of mirrors and flatscreen TVs, is another notable employer. Green Bay is the home of the Wisconsin Packers, a professional football team that has won the Super Bowl twice and the Lombardi Award for Outstanding Performance in a National Football League game. The city is also home to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, which has won two Super Bowls. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which won the 1996 Super Bowl, is based in the town. The Green Bay Police Department, which was founded in 1894, is the state's oldest police force. The department has been in existence since 1894. It is the oldest police department in the United States. It was also the site of the second World War II invasion of Germany, which took place in World War I. It has been home to a number of major landmarks, including the Wisconsin State Capitol and the Wisconsin Turnpike.

Arts and culture

Green Bay has one enclosed shopping mall, East Town Mall, located within the city. The city was home to the first Shopko discount department store; it closed on April 22, 2019. The former Green Bay Symphony Orchestra disbanded after their 2014-2015 season, after performing for over 100 years, citing financial difficulties. The Meyer Theatre and the Hotel Northland are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Brown County Library (BCL) Central Branch is located in downtown Green Bay and has served as the county public library since 1968. In 1994, the Brown County library was named Wisconsin Library of the Year. The Broadway District hosts a farmer's market every Wednesday from May to October. The Shipyard District hosts the annual All Bands On Deck live music festival with bands at downtown bars and restaurants and free shuttles between venues. The City Stadium is the former home of the Green Bay Packers and is now the site of the Bay Beach Amusement Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. The Green Bay Botanical Garden is the home of Fox River State Recreational Trail. The Bay Park Square shopping mall is in the suburb of Ashwaubenon and is located near the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Northland was once the largest hotel in Wisconsin and is currently home to The Tarlton Theatre and The Art Garage, which are art galleries in the downtown area. The Museum of Wisconsin History is located at the Hazelwood Historic House Museum and the Neville Public Museum in the city's downtown.

Sports

Other major sporting events in Green Bay include the Bellin Run and the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon. The Oneida Golf and Country Club (private) was established in 1928. Green Bay is home to the U.S. Open, which is held every year in September. The U.N. World Cup is held in the city every year from August to September. It is the first major international sporting event to be held outside of the United States. It was first held in 1928 and is now the world's second-largest golf course. It has a course that is one of the most difficult to play in the world, with an average score of 6.5 out of 7.5. Private schools in Green Bay include Notre Dame de la Baie Academy, Northeastern Wisconsin Lutheran High school, and Bay City Baptist School. Green Bay area colleges and universities: University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wisconsin-Superior, and Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The city is also home to the Wisconsin Institute of Technology and the Wisconsin State University of the Arts, both of which are located in the town of Green Bay. The Green Bay School District operates 25 elementary schools, two K8 schools, four middle schools, and four high schools in the city and surrounding area. The district also operates one alternative school, Green Bay Alternative High School. The school district also has one K8 school and one alternative high school in the area.
